Winner at Falling Walls 2020

Makings of a Malignancy, our cancer-themed escape room, was listed as a winner in the Science Engagement category at the Falling Walls Berlin Science Breakthroughs of the Year 2020. With over 240 submissions from 73 countries, Excite Science is ecstatic to be selected within the top 10 science engagements of 2020.

Judged by an international panel of experts, lead judge Professor Melanie Smallman remarked how we were approaching cancer education by ‘taking something innovative and fun to deliver an important and serious message’. You can see the annoucement from the World Science Summit below, including an interview with me about the impact we’re trying to achieve.

I was also super happy to see Dr Nicolas Bonne being awarded the breakthrough of the year for his amazing project ‘The Tactile Universe’. As a visually impaired astrophysicist and fellow Australian, Nicolas has developed free 3D printable resources to help vision impaired people (particularly students) engage with current topics in astronomy research.

I’m proud that Excite Science is now a Falling Walls Alumni and I’m looking forward to international collaborations with all those involved in the near future.
